On June 19, 1865 that Major General Gordon Granger of the United States Army arrived in Galveston, Texas where he was to take command of the Union troops there to enforce the emancipation of the slaves there. Juneteenth is then also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day for that reason. It has been celebrated in Texas since 1866 and in 2021 it was made a Federal holiday.
