Even today it is rare for an actor to play both heroic and villainous roles. From John Wayne to Tom Cruise, most actors either stick to wearing white hats or black hats. That having been said, from the Twenties to the Sixties there was an actor who became famous for playing both heroes and villains. He not only played some of the screen's most famous good guys, but some of its most famous bad guys as well. That actor was none other than Basil Rathbone. He was born 120 years ago today on 12 June 1892.
Of course, the most famous role that Basil Rathbone would ever play was a heroic one, that of Sherlock Holmes. He first played the detective in 20th Century Fox's adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939). The film proved successful enough that it was followed by 20th Century Fox's production of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1939). The success of both movies would lead to a series produced by Universal Studios, starting with Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror in 1942 and ending with Dressed to Kill in 1946. A total of 12 films were made in Universal's "Sherlock Holmes" series. Not only would Basil Rathbone be so successful in the role of Holmes that he became typecast to some degree, but he would be so successful in the role that to this day he remains for many the quintessential movie version of Sherlock Holmes.
In many ways Basil Rathbone was ideal for the role of Sherlock Holmes, and not simply because he looked the way many people pictured the great detective. The fact is that like Sherlock Holmes, Basil Rathbone was a master of disguise and camouflage. During World War I he had served as an intelligence officer and was so skilful that he once scouted enemy positions in broad daylight!
Basil Rathbone would play other heroic roles besides Sherlock Holmes. One of his more famous roles was that of Baron Wolf von Frankenstein, the son of Henry Frankenstein (creator of the Creature), in Son of Frankenstein (1939). In the film Wolf von Frankenstein attempts to redeem his father's reputation while crossing wits with evil blacksmith Ygor (played by Bela Lugosi). Basil Rathbone would also play detective Philo Vance in one film, The Bishop Murder Case (1929), ten years before he first appeared as Sherlock Holmes. Mr. Rathbone would play heroes in the films The Dawn Patrol (1938--the only film in which he was Errol Flynn's ally) and International Lady (1941).
Of course, while Basil Rathbone played Sherlock Holmes in many films and occasionally played heroes in a few others, beyond playing Holmes he is perhaps best known for playing the villain in many swashbucklers. In fact, his most famous role besides that of Sherlock Holmes may well be that of Sir Guy of Gisbourne in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). The Adventures of Robin Hood would not be the only film in which Basil Rathbone and Errol Flynn fought each other. Mr. Rathbone had also been the villain of Captain Blood (1935). Mr. Rathbone was also the villain in the classic swashbucklers The Mark of Zorro (1940). He would go onto play the villain in the parodies of the old swashbuckler films Casanova's Big Night (1954) and The Court Jester (1955). Basil Rathbone was not only the villain in swashbuckler movies, but in adaptations of classic literature such as David Copperfield (1935) and A Tale of Two Cities (1935). He would play sinister figures in such horror movies as Tower of London (1939), The Mad Doctor (1940), and Tales of Terror (1962).
Just as Basil Rathbone shared skills with Sherlock Holmes, he also shared a skill with the villains he played in his swashbuckler movies. Quite simply, Basil Rathbone was a master fencer. While Errol Flynn won their battles in Captain Blood and The Adventures of Robin Hood, in truth Mr. Rathbone could have beaten Mr. Flynn in matter of minutes, if not seconds. Ironically given his skill in real life and his many on screen sword duels (including ones in Tower of London and The Court Jester), he only won one fight in a movie, playing Tybalt in the 1936 version of Romeo and Juliet!
Ultimately, Basil Rathbone was a singular talent, capable of playing both heroic and villainous roles. In fact, off the top of my head I can only think of one actor who was as capable of playing both good guys and bad guys: Vincent Price. Interestingly enough, Vincent Price's career paralleled that of Basil Rathbone in many ways. Both appeared in costume dramas early in their career and would later appear in horror movies. The two appeared together in Tower of London (1939), Casanova's Big Night (1954), Tales of Terror (1962), and Comedy of Terrors (1963).
Sadly, Basil Rathbone would die of a heart attack at the age of 75 in 1967. He left behind an amazing legacy of films in which he often played the villain, but also films in which he played the hero as well. He was an actor of such skill that he was convincing in playing both good guys and bad guys. Indeed, he played Sherlock Holmes for the first time in the year following his famous turn as Guy of Gisborne! There are very few actors who get to play the hero and the villain in various films. There are still fewer who can do both well. Basil Rathbone was one of those very few.

The Late Great Ann Rutherford
Film star Ann Rutherford, star of films ranging from Pride and Prejudice (1940) to The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947) , passed yesterday, 11 June 2012, at the age of 94.
Ann Rutherford was born 2 November 1917 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Her father, John Rutherford had been a tenor at the New York Metropolitan Opera. Her mother, Lucille Mansfield, had been a silent film actress. The family moved to California, first to San Francisco and then to Los Angeles. On her way home from school each day Miss Rutherford would stop by the radio stations in Los Angeles to watch the actors in radio dramas perform. It was after she was criticised by her English teacher that she decided she would become an actress. Within a month of her decision Miss Rutherford was employed at Los Angeles station KFAC in the radio drama Nancy and Dick: The Spirit of 76.
Ann Rutherford made her film debut in 1935 in Waterfront Lady at Mascot Pictures (soon to become Republic). For the next few years she would star in B Westerns featuring such actors as John Wayne and Gene Autry, including Melody Trail (1935), The Oregon Trail (1936), The Lawless Nineties (1936), The Lonely Trail (1936), and Public Cowboy No. 1 (1936). She then moved from Republic to MGM. Her first movie shot at MGM would be The Bride Wore Red (1937), in which she had a small, uncredited role. It was in 1937 that she made a debut as Polly Benedict, Andy Hardy's girlfriend, in You're Only Young Once. From 1938 to 1942 Miss Rutherford would appear in twelve more movies in the popular "Andy Hardy" series, which starred Mickey Rooney. She also appeared in Of Human Hearts (1938), Dramatic School (1938), A Christmas Carol (1938--as the Ghost of Christmas Past), and These Glamour Girls (1939).
It would be in 1939 that Ann Rutherford would appear in what could be her most famous role, that of Scarlett O'Hara's youngest sister, Carreen, in Gone With the Wind (1939). She very nearly did not get the role. Miss Rutherford was under contract to MGM, the head of which was Louis B. Mayer, who also happened to be the father in law of David O. Selznick (the producer of Gone With the Wind). Mr. Selznick had approached Mr. Mayer about borrowing Ann Rutherford for Gone With the Wind, but Mr. Mayer told Miss Rutherford that it was a "nothing part" and he intended to refuse to loan her to Mr. Selznick. Ann Rutherford was a huge fan of the novel and wanted to be in the film so badly that she broke down in tears, something highly unusual for her. Louis B. Mayer then relented and loaned her to David O. Selznick.
Following Gone with the Wind, Ann Rutherford appeared in such films as Pride and Prejudice (1940), Whistling in the Dark (1941), Whistling in Dixie (1942), Happy Land (1943), Whistling in Brooklyn (1943), Bedside Manner (1945), Inside Job (1946), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947), and The Adventures of Don Juan (1948). She would take over the title role in the radio show Blondie in the late Forties.
Miss Rutherford would retire from film in 1950, but she had a healthy career in television ahead of her. In the Fifties she guest starred in such shows as Suspense, Robert Montgomery Presents, General Electric Theatre, Climax, Playhouse 90, The Donna Reed Show, and Perry Mason. Except for a guest appearance on Perry Mason in 1964, Ann Rutherford would not appear on screen again until 1969 in a guest appearance on Love American Style. She would guest star twice more on Love American Style, and she would guest star on The Bob Newhart Show, playing the mother of Emily Hartley (Suzanne Pleshette). She also appeared in the films They Only Kill Their Masters (1972) and Won Ton Ton: The Dog Who Saved Hollywood (1976). Her later years Ann Rutherford spent attending many special screenings and conventions for Gone With the Wind. Aside from Olivia de Havilland, she was the final surviving major cast member from the film.
The first thing that anyone would notice about Ann Rutherford is that she was beautiful. I have often said my first classic film crush was Vivien Leigh, an event which occurred when I saw Gone With the Wind for the first time. That having been said, my crush on Ann Rutherford was not far behind. I always thought she was incredibly beautiful, whether in the B Westerns I watched when I was young or the major feature films she made in the Forties. Indeed, I could never understand why Polly Benedict remained faithful to Andy Hardy in all those films when his head was constantly being turned by other girls (Judy Garland and Lana Turner among them). As a lad I always thought that as pretty as Polly was she could easily find another boyfriend who wouldn't even look at another girl!
Of course, as I got older I learned that Ann Rutherford was not just beautiful, but she was also a very good actress. More often than not she played girl friends and fiancées in her movies, but she endowed them with life and character that a less talented actress might not be able to. When she did receive a role that worth her talent, Miss Rutherford showed just how good of an actress she really was. Indeed, despite being on screen for what is actually only a few minutes, Ann Rutherford made a big impression as Carreen O'Hara, Scarlett's overly optimistic, younger sister. She was also quite good as the impulsive and headstrong Lydia Bennett in the 1940 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. One of her best roles was also one of her less sympathetic. She was impressive in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty as Walter's none too bright, yet still nagging fiancée Gertrude.
Not only was Ann Rutherford one of Hollywood's great beauties and a very fine actress, but from my fellow Gone With the Wind fans who had the opportunity to speak to her, even briefly, I have heard that she was one of the sweetest women one could meet, a true lady. She always made time for her fans and always had kind words for them. Not only did she frequently appear at various Gone With the Wind events, but she also donated many things to the Gone With the Wind museum in Atlanta, Georgia, including an original script. She was known for her generosity and was always helping others. In the end Ann Rutheford was not simply a talented and glamorous actress, she was a woman who was a beautiful on the inside as she was on the out.

Frank Cady Passes On

Frank Cady was born on 8 September 1915 in Susanville, California. He made his film debut in a bit part as a farmer in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town in 1936. He studied drama at Stanford University in Stanford, California. Following his graduation from Stanford University, Mr. Cady studied acting at Westminster Theatre in London, England. He would return to Stanford University in 1939 to accept a position as a teaching assistant and to pursue his post-graduate studies. He would eventually leave Stanford to work as an announcer at various radio stations throughout California. In 1943 he joined the United States Army Air Forces and served in the European Theatre during World War II.
Following World War II Frank Cady returned to work in radio and also acted in various plays in Southern California. In 1947 he made his first film appearance following World War II, in the movie Violence. From the late Forties into the Fifties he appeared in such films as Sarge Goes to College (1947), The Vicious Circle (1948), The Sky Dragon (1949), Flamingo Road (1949), The Great Rupert (1950), D.O.A. (1950), The Asphalt Jungle (1950), Father of the Bride (1950), Ace in the Hole (1951), Dear Brat (1951), When Worlds Collide (1951), Rear Window (1954), The Bad Seed (1956), The Girl Most Likely (1958), and The Man Who Understood Women (1959). He made his television debut in an episode of Life With Luigi in 1953. From the Fifties into the Sixties he would play the recurring role of Doc Williams on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, starting in 1954. Throughout the Fifties he appeared in such shows as December Bride, You Are There, Maverick, Make Room for Daddy, 77 Sunset Strip, Trackdown, and The Alaskans.
In the Sixties Mr. Cady appeared in such shows as Rawhide, Perry Mason, The Untouchables, Cheyenne, The Virginian, Wagon Train, Gunsmoke, and The Andy Griffith Show. It was in 1963 that he joined the cast of the new sitcom Petticoat Junction. On the show Frank Cady played Sam Drucker, owner of the general store in the town of Hooterville. Frank Cady would also appear as a regular character on Green Acres, which also took place in the vicinity of Hooterville. He would later make guest appearances as Sam Drucker on The Beverly Hillbillies (the Clampetts would visit Hooterville). Frank Cady was one of the few actors in the history of television to play the same character on multiple shows. He also appeared in the movies The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao (1964) and The Gnome-Mobile (1967).
In the Seventies Mr. Cady guest starred on such shows as Hawaii Five-O, Monster Squad, and Eight is Enough. He appeared in the movies The Million Dollar Duck (1971), Zandy's Bride (1974), and Hearts of the West (1975). In the Eighties he guest starred on the show AfterM*A*S*H and the TV reunion movie Return to Green Acres.
In retrospect it should be little wonder that Frank Cady should be cast as the Nelsons' friendly neighbour Doc Williams on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and congenial general store clerk and postmaster Sam Drucker on Petticoat Junction, Green Acres, and The Beverly Hillbillies. It was early in his career that Mr. Cady was cast in the role of friendly, small town court clerks, hotel clerks, store owners, and other similar roles. That is not to say that Frank Cady was not versatile. He was very much so. In the Alan Hale Jr. comedy Sarge Goes to College (1947) he convincingly played a college professor. He played a drunk on more than one occasion, including guest shots on Make Room For Daddy and The Andy Griffith Show. In He Walked by Night (1948) Mr. Cady was even one of the suspects in a murder. He played officers of the law more than once, in such films as The Crooked Way (1949) and Atomic City (1952). Generally these roles were not very big, but Mr. Cady was convincing in all of them. It must also be pointed out that Frank Cady was one of the busiest actors of his time. From 1963 to 1965 he appeared in regular roles in two different sitcoms (Doc Williams on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and Sam Drucker on Petticoat Junction). In the late Sixties he appeared as Sam Drucker in three different sitcoms, Petticoat Junction, Green Acres, and The Beverly Hillbillies (although it was only on the former two that he was a regular).
While Frank Cady played much more than clerks of various types and he appeared on more than just Petticoat Junction and Green Acres, it is as Sam Drucker that he is best known. This is perhaps for good reason. Not only did Sam Drucker appear on Americans' TV screens two times a week (three when he guest starred on The Beverly Hillbillies), but Frank Cady took the character well beyond that of a typical sitcom character. Like other great sitcom characters, from Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show to Mrs. Slocombe on Are You Being Served, Sam Drucker was the sort of person one might actually know. He was the sort of store clerk that one might encounter in any small town in almost any of the United States. Although intelligent, he would nonetheless overlook the eccentricities of his friends and neighbours, perhaps choosing to see the best in people. He accepted the wealthy, educated Oliver Wendell Douglas (Eddie Albert) and he accepted the not so wealthy, uneducated Fred Ziffel. Frank Cady made Sam Drucker, apparently the only sane resident of Hooterville, seem real and everyone loved him for it. While Frank Cady should probably be remembered for many of his either fine roles as well, he can certainly be proud for playing the role of Sam Drucker. He certainly won't be forgotten.

Judy Garland's 90th Birthday
Like many member of Generation X, Judy Garland may well have been the first actor from the Golden Age of Hollywood that I ever encountered. For those of you who were either too young to remember or were not born yet, there was a time, from the Fifties into the Nineties, when The Wizard of Oz (1939) was shown every year on American network broadcast television (CBS for most of that time). It did not matter whether you had cable or satellite television, as long you had a TV aerial you could still be guaranteed of seeing The Wizard of Oz once every year.
It is for that reason that The Wizard of Oz was probably the first classic film ever seen by many Americans (and I suspect many Canadians) of my generation. As a result, Judy Garland was the first classic movie star to whom many of us were exposed on a regular basis. In fact, I cannot even remember the first time I watched The Wizard of Oz. My earliest memory of The Wizard of Oz comes from when I was five years old, and even then I remember that I had seen it before. Regardless, I was aware of Judy Garland before I was Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, Bette Davis, or even John Wayne (which is really saying something given I came from a household of Western fans).
That having been said, Judy Garland was not my first classic movie star crush (that would be Vivien Leigh), although I would eventually develop a crush on her. Having seen The Wizard of Oz while very young, as I grew older I would see yet more of Miss Garland's films, including Babes in Arms (1939), Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), the "Andy Hardy" movies she made with Mickey Rooney, and others. As I got yet older I saw her in more mature roles, such as Ziegfield Girl (1941), Presenting Lily Mars (1943), The Harvey Girls (1946), Summer Stock (1950) , and so on. It was upon seeing Judy Garland in her more mature role, no longer the ingénue, that I realised she was very attractive. I developed a crush on Miss Garland that has lasted to some degree or another to this day.
Of course, even in her more mature roles Judy Garland did not have the glamour that, say, Vivien Leigh, Hedy Lamarr, Gene Tierney, or Margaret Lockwood had. At least to me she was not one of Hollywood's great love goddesses. That having been said, she held her own sort of attraction to me that was in some ways more assessable than that of such beauties as Vivien Leigh or Hedy Lamarr. Quite simply, she was the ideal girl next door. This was the role she played in the film that shot her to stardom, The Wizard of Oz. After all, Dorothy Gale was the sort of girl one would expect to find on a Kansas farm, although prettier and smarter than most. Miss Garland's roles that followed The Wizard of Oz would vary a good deal, from the daughter of a Missouri businessman (Meet Me in St. Louis) to a Harvey Girl (The Harvey Girls) to a movie star (A Star is Born), but in most cases Miss Garland played women who were still girls with American, small town values in their heart. Pretty, intelligent, talented, and yet Judy Garland played the sort of women one might see walking down the street of one's hometown. In many ways this made Judy Garland every bit as attractive, emotionally and spiritually if not physically, as Hollywood's reigning goddesses of glamour.
I know that I am not alone in having had a crush on Judy Garland in my youth. I know of many red blooded, American men who count Judy Garland as one of their first crushes. I am not sure if the reasons for their crushes on Judy Garland are the same as mine. There may be many who find Judy Garland glamorous and sexy in the same way that Hedy Lamarr and Ava Gardner are. For myself, however, Judy Garland remains the idealised, American small town girl, someone who combined wholesomeness, morals, and sex appeal together in one very attractive package. Given The Wizard of Oz continues to air on TCM and other cable channels, as well as seeing the occasional re-release to theatres, I have no doubt that it will be the first classic film many will ever see in their lives. I also have no doubt that for may Judy Garland will still remain among their first crushes.

As I got yet older I saw her in more mature roles, such as Ziegfield Girl (1941), Presenting Lily Mars (1943), The Harvey Girls (1946), Summer Stock (1950) , and so on. It was upon seeing Judy Garland in her more mature role, no longer the ingénue, that I realised she was very attractive. I developed a crush on Miss Garland that has lasted to some degree or another to this day.
Of course, even in her more mature roles Judy Garland did not have the glamour that, say, Vivien Leigh, Hedy Lamarr, Gene Tierney, or Margaret Lockwood had. At least to me she was not one of Hollywood's great love goddesses. That having been said, she held her own sort of attraction to me that was in some ways more assessable than that of such beauties as Vivien Leigh or Hedy Lamarr. Quite simply, she was the ideal girl next door. This was the role she played in the film that shot her to stardom, The Wizard of Oz. After all, Dorothy Gale was the sort of girl one would expect to find on a Kansas farm, although prettier and smarter than most. Miss Garland's roles that followed The Wizard of Oz would vary a good deal, from the daughter of a Missouri businessman (Meet Me in St. Louis) to a Harvey Girl (The Harvey Girls) to a movie star (A Star is Born), but in most cases Miss Garland played women who were still girls with American, small town values in their heart. Pretty, intelligent, talented, and yet Judy Garland played the sort of women one might see walking down the street of one's hometown. In many ways this made Judy Garland every bit as attractive, emotionally and spiritually if not physically, as Hollywood's reigning goddesses of glamour.
I know that I am not alone in having had a crush on Judy Garland in my youth. I know of many red blooded, American men who count Judy Garland as one of their first crushes. I am not sure if the reasons for their crushes on Judy Garland are the same as mine. There may be many who find Judy Garland glamorous and sexy in the same way that Hedy Lamarr and Ava Gardner are. For myself, however, Judy Garland remains the idealised, American small town girl, someone who combined wholesomeness, morals, and sex appeal together in one very attractive package. Given The Wizard of Oz continues to air on TCM and other cable channels, as well as seeing the occasional re-release to theatres, I have no doubt that it will be the first classic film many will ever see in their lives. I also have no doubt that for may Judy Garland will still remain among their first crushes.

Richard Dawson Passes On
Richard Dawson, who played Corporal Newkirk on Hogan's Heroes and was a regular on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, passed on 2 June 2012 at the age of 79. The cause was oesophageal cancer.
Richard Dawson was born Colin Lionel Emm in Gosport, Hampshire on 20 November 1932. He was only 14 when he left home to join the Merchant Navy. He served in the Merchant Navy for three years. Afterwards he would take up being a comedian. He would migrate to the United States with his wife, British screen legend Diana Dors. He made his first appearances on television in 1959, on his wife's show (The Diana Dors Show) and on The Steve Allen Plymouth Show. It was in 1962 that he made his acting debut in a small part in the film The Longest Day. In the Sixties he would go onto appear in such films as Promises! Promises! (1963), King Rat (1965), Out of Sight (1966), Munster, Go Home (1966), and The Devil's Brigade (1968).
It would be for his work on television that he would become best known. He appeared on such shows as The Jack Benny Prograamme, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Outer Limits, and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. It was in 1965 that he was cast in his best known role, that of Corporal Peter Newkirk in Hogan's Heroes. The series ran for six years and has been successful in syndication ever since its cancellation.
In 1970 Mr. Dawson joined the cast of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. He remained with the show until its end in 1973. In 1973 he became a regular on The New Dick Van Dyke Show in its final season. That same year he became a regular panellist on a revival of I've Got a Secret and the long running Match Game. It was in 1976 that Richard Dawson became the host of Family Feud. He would remain with the game show until 1985. In the Seventies Richard Dawson also appeared on the TV shows Love American Style, The Odd Couple, and McMillan & Wife. He provided voices for the animated series Wait Til Your Father Gets Home and Hong Kong Phooey. The Eighties saw Mr. Dawson's career slow down, but he did appear in the feature film The Running Man (1987) as sinister game show host Damon Killian. He returned to a revival of Family Feud in 1988 and remained with the the show until it went off the air in 1995.

The Late Great Ray Bradbury
I have written many eulogies in this blog, but there have been only a very few times that I have had to eulogise someone who had the impact on me that fantasist Ray Bradbury did. Quite simply, with the possible exception of Doc Savage creator Lester Dent, Ray Bradbury probably had more influence upon me than any other writer of the 20th Century. Ray Bradbury, who wrote such books as Something Wicked This Way Comes, Dandelion Wine, Fahrenheit 451, and The Martian Chronicles, passed last night, 5 June 2012, at the age of 91.
Raymond Douglas Bradbury was born on 22 August 1920 in Waukegan, Illinois. He was a direct descendent of Mary Perkins Bradbury, who was among those in Salem, Massachusetts who was tried, convicted, and hanged as a witch in 1700. Through Mary Bradbury he was also related to Ralph Waldo Emerson (who was one of Mary Perkins Bradbury's great great grandchildren). As a youngster he was a voracious reader. He read the works of the Brothers Grimm, L. Frank Baum's tales of Oz, the stories of Edgar Allan Poe, the works of Jules Verne, the works of H. G. Wells, and the books of Edgar Rice Burroughs. He would eventually discover such science fiction pulp magazines as Amazing Stories and comic strips such as Harold Foster's Tarzan, Buck Rogers, and Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon. Even as a child he loved films. He saw Lon Chaney's Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), The Mummy (1932), King Kong (1933), Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933), and many other classic films. He loved magic as a child and saw the Great Blackstone on stage.
It was during the Labour Day weekend of 1932 that young Ray Bradbury's life would change forever. That weekend he attended a carnival in Waukegan where he watched a stage show of a magician called Mr. Electrico. Mr. Electrico would sit in an electric chair with the current going throughout his body. At the end of the show he would raise a sword and knight each of the children there, the electricity still running through his body. As Mr. Electrico knighted young Mr. Bradbury, electricity ran through the sword and throughout Mr. Bradbury's body. As Mr. Electrico knighted young Ray Bradbury, he shouted, "Live forever!" The next day Ray Bradbury returned to the carnival to talk to Mr. Electrico. Mr. Electrico introduced him to others at the carnival--the Fat Lady, the Tattooed Man, the Skeleton Man, and the other people in the carnival's sideshows. Mr. Electrico and Ray Bradbury talked for some length about their various philosophies. It was the next day that his family moved to Tuscon, Arizona and not long afterwards that Ray Bradbury began writing full time. Not only would Ray Bradbury's experience with Mr. Electrico and the carnival lead to him taking up writing, but it would prove a source of inspiration for some of his most famous works, including the short story "The Black Ferris," the short story "The Illustrated Man (and the framing device of the book of the same name)," the novel Dandelion Wine, and the novel Something Wicked This Way Comes.
It was in 1934 that Ray Bradbury's family moved to Los Angeles, California. It was there that Mr. Bradbury met fellow science fiction fan Forrest J. Ackerman. Mr. Ackerman invited Mr. Bradbury to the Los Angeles chapter of the Science Fiction League. It was through the Science Fiction League that he would meet and receive encouragement from such professional science fiction and fantasy writers as Robert A. Heinlen, Fredric Brown, and Jack Williamson. Among Ray Bradbury's friends involved in the Science Fiction League was future special effects legend Ray Harryhausen. During this period Ray Bradbury contributed to various fanzines. In 1939 he launched his own fanzine, Futuria Fantasia, which lasted for four issues. He would also contribute to the film magazine Script.
It was in 1941that Ray Bradbury made his first professional sale. The short story "Pendulum" was co-written with Henry Hasse and appeared in the November 1941 issue of Super Science Stories. It was by the end of 1942 that Mr. Bradbury had established himself as a full time writer. Ray Bradbury's earliest work was published in the various fantasy and science fiction pulp magazines of the day (Weird Tales, Astounding), but eventually he would become one of the first authors considered to be a science fiction writer (even if he actually was not) to be published in mainstream, mass circulation magazines. His story "One Timeless Spring" was published in the 13 April 1945 issue of Collier's. That same year a young editor at Mademoiselle named Truman Capote rescued Ray Bradbury's short story "The Homecoming" from a slush pile. The story was published in the October 1946 issue of Mademoiselle and won an O. Henry Award. Afterwards Ray Bradbury would be published in a number of mass circulation magazines, including Esquire, Good Housekeeping, McCall's, Maclean's, Playboy, The Saturday Evening Post, Seventeen, and many others. It was in 1947 that Ray Bradbury's first collection of short stories, Dark Carnival, would be published.
The year 1950 saw Ray Bradbury make another breakthrough. The Martian Chronicles collected many of Mr. Bradbury's fantasy stories about colonists on the planet Mars in a format that partly an anthology, partly a novel. The book found its way to the hands of novelist Christopher Isherwood, who announced Mr. Bradbury as "a very great and unusual talent." The Martian Chronicles would then prove to have mainstream success often denied many fantasy and science fiction books. Mr. Bradbury would follow the success of The Martian Chronicles with another book that was partly an anthology and partly a novel, The Illustrated Man, in 1951.
Ray Bradbury would see even more success with his first true novel, Fahrenheit 451, in 1953. The novel had its beginnings in the short story "Bright Phoenix," written in 1947, which Mr. Bradbury expanded into the novella "The Fireman," published in Galaxy Science Fiction in 1951. He later expanded the novella into the novel Fahrenheit 451. The novel would prove to be one of Ray Bradbury's most successful and most lasting works. In 1966 it was adapted by Francois Truffaut as a motion picture starring Oskar Werner and Julie Christie. Ray Bradbury would follow the success of Fahrenheit 451 with nine more novels. Like The Martian Chronicles and The Illustrated Man, Dandelion Wine was partly an anthology and partly a novel. It drew heavily upon Mr. Bradbury's childhood in Waukegan, Illinois. What may be his most famous work besides Fahrenheit 451, also drew heavily upon his childhood in Waukegan. Alongside Fahrenheit 451, Something Wicked This Way Comes is arguably Ray Bradbury's masterpiece and his most famous novel. A horror novel with elements of fantasy, Something Wicked This Way Comes dealt with such weighty material as adolescence, belief, fear, death, and the struggle between good and evil. The Readers' List of The Modern Library included Something Wicked This Way Comes among the 100 Best Novels. The novel was adapted as a film of the same name in 1983.
Ray Bradbury's other novels include The Halloween Tree (1972), Death Is a Lonely Business (1985), A Graveyard for Lunatics (1990), Green Shadows, White Whale (1992), From the Dust Returned (2001), Let's All Kill Constance (2002), and Farewell Summer (2006). During Mr. Bradbury's lifetime there were around forty anthologies of his works published.
As prolific as Ray Bradbury was, one would think he would have had no time to write anything but his short stories and novels. In fact, not only did many of Ray Bradbury's short stories and novels provide the basis for television show episodes and feature films, but he also wrote several screenplays and teleplays. Several of his short stories would be adapted for the radio shows Dimension X and later X Minus One. The first television adaptation of his work would be a 1951 adaptation of "Zero Hour" for the series Lights Out. Over the years Ray Bradbury's short stories would be adapted for such television shows as Suspense, Tales of Tomorrow, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and The Twilight Zone. In 1980 NBC aired a mini-series based on The Martian Chronicles. He would write original teleplays for such shows as Fireside Theatre, Steve Canyon, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and The Twilight Zone. From 1985 to 1992 Ray Bradbury hosted Ray Bradbury Theatre, an anthology series based on his many short stories. Not only did Mr. Bradbury host the series, but he also wrote many of the teleplays.
Over the years several motion pictures would be based on the works of Ray Bradbury, including The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms (1953--inspired by the story "The Fog Horn"), Fahrenheit 451 (1966), The Picasso Summer (1969--based on the story of the same name), The Illustrated Man (1969), Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983), Quest (1984--based on the story "Frost and Fire"), The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit (1998), A Sound of Thunder (2005), and Chrysalis (2008). Ray Bradbury would also work on original screenplays for Hollywood, including It Came From Outer Space (1953), Moby Dick (1956), King of Kings (1961), the animated short "Icarus Montgolfier Wright" (1962), and Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland (1989). New adaptations of Fahrenheit 451, The Illustrated Man, Something Wicked This Way Comes, and Dandelion Wine are currently in pre-production.
I have been a fan of Ray Bradbury's work since childhood. When I was young I went through a period during which I read a good deal of science fiction. It was during this period that I discovered Ray Bradbury's short stories and novels. While I soon discovered that most science fiction novels were not to my tastes and stopped reading many of the writers I read during that period, I never abandoned Ray Bradbury. Of course, much of this is perhaps because Ray Bradbury was not actually a science fiction writer, despite what numerous obituaries in the mainstream media proclaimed today. Ray Bradbury himself once stated, "First of all, I don't write science fiction," he said. "I've only done one science-fiction book and that's Fahrenheit 451, based on reality. It was named so to represent the temperature at which paper ignites. Science fiction is a depiction of the real. Fantasy is a depiction of the unreal. So Martian Chronicles is not science fiction, it's fantasy. It couldn't happen, you see?" Ray Bradbury was much more a fantasist than he ever was a science fiction writer. He did not concern himself with technology, gadgetry, and what could happen. Instead Mr. Bradbury wrote about the human spirit, whether what he was writing was possible or not.
Of course, even referring to Ray Bradbury by as broad a term as "fantasist" does not seem quite right. The simple fact is that in many respects Mr. Bradbury transcended genre classification. This can be seen in his most famous works. Fahrenheit 451 was obviously science fiction. The Martian Chronicles and Dandelion Wine were fantasies. Something Wicked This Way Comes is a horror novel (the greatest horror novel ever written, in my humble opinion). While the vast majority of Ray Bradbury's short stories and novels contained fantastic elements of some sort, those short stories and novels could be considered as belonging to a wide variety of genres. His short story "The Jar" could be considered both a suspense story and a horror story. His short story “The Very Gentle Murders" is a piece of black comedy. His novels Death Is a Lonely Business, A Graveyard for Lunatics, and Let's Kill Constance are all mysteries. Not only did Ray Bradbury work in several genres, but arguably most of his works can be considered to belong to more than one genre. Although widely considered a horror novel, Something Wicked This Way Comes contains a good deal of fantasy. The Halloween Tree is more or less a fantasy novel, but one with touches of horror. In some ways, I suppose Ray Bradbury could be considered a genre all his own.
Indeed, Ray Bradbury could in many ways be considered as creating his very own genre, one in which American small town life is blended with the fantastic. While it is true that many of H. P. Lovecraft's works are set in small towns (Innsmouth, Dunwich), Mr. Lovecraft's small towns were creepy, New England villages that hardly seem typical of American small towns. In contrast, the small towns of Ray Bradbury's short stories and novels could have come straight from a Norman Rockwell painting. They were comforting and familiar in the way that Mayberry on The Andy Griffith Show is, the sort of quiet hamlets one can find anywhere in the Midwest or South. Of course, the difference between Ray Bradbury's Green Town, Illinois and Mayberry, North Carolina is that in Mayberry one would not expect to one of its inhabitants to build a Happiness Machine or for the visiting carnival to contain evil incarnate. Ray Bradbury blended the familiarity and comfort of American small town life with fantastic elements that was all too convincing. In doing so he would prove to be an influence on Stephen King (who in his book Danse Macabre stated, "My first experience of real horror came at the hands of Ray Bradbury."), Clive Barker, Neil Gaiman, Margaret Atwood, and many others.
In fact, Ray Bradbury's influence on Anglophonic pop culture is so great that it cannot ever be adequately estimated. The concept of the "butterfly effect (in which a small change in one place may cause greater changes elsewhere)" was dealt with first in Ray Bradbury's short story "The Sound of Thunder" in 1952. In that story the killing of a mere butterfly by a time traveller at the time of the dinosaurs results in subtle changes in the present. Ray Bradbury's most famous novels would not only prove to have a lasting influence not only on literature and film, but even on music. The novel Something Wicked This Way Comes inspired the songs "Cooger and Dark" by Mandrake Paddle Steamer, "The Dark Ride" by Helloween, "Something Wicked (that way went)" by Vernian Process, and "Something Wicked This Way Comes" by Wednesday 13. The concept albums Imaginaerum by Nightwish, Carnival of Lost Souls by Nox Arcana, and The Last Temptation by Alice Cooper were also inspired by the novel. The album Pandemonium Shadow Show by Harry Nilsson took its title from the carnival in the novel. Something Wicked This Way Comes is mentioned in Stephen King's novel The Dead Zone. Something Wicked This Way Comes also provided the basis for two radio dramas. The novel was also spoofed on South Park and Tiny Toon Adventures.
Fahrenheit 451 would also have a huge impact on Anglophonic pop culture. The novel would be referenced in television shows ranging from The Simpsons to Lost. It would also be referenced in several movies (including Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, the title of which did not please Mr. Bradbury) and possibly inspire others (including Equlibrium from 2002 and The Island from 2005). Fahrenheit 451 is quoted at the beginning of Stephen King's Firestarter. Andrew Fox's novel The Good Humour Man was an homage to Fahrenheit 451. Robert Calvert entitled a collection of poems (and later an album of poems as well)
Centigrade 232--a reference to Fahrenheit 451 (232 degrees Celsius equals 451 degrees Fahrenheit). In the poem "Learn by Heart This Poem of Mine," Hungarian poet György Faludy references Fahrenheit 451. Like Something Wicked This Way Comes, Fahrenheit 451 would also inspire music. Heavy metal band Steel Prophet's album Dark Hallucinations contains a suite of songs based on the novel. The Hawkwind album Choose Your Masques featured a song entitled "Fahrenheit 451."
Beyond Something Wicked This Way Comes and Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury would yet other influences upon pop culture. The short story "The Rocket Man" may have inspired two songs: "Rocket Man" by Elton John and "The Rocket Man" by Pearls Before Swine. The Apollo 15 astronauts named a crater on the moon "Dandelion Crater" after Ray Bradbury's novel Dandelion Wine. Rush's song "The Body Electric" appears to have been inspired by Ray Bradbury's short story "I Sing the Body Electric."
As to why Ray Bradbury had such an impact on pop culture, the reasons are perhaps manifold. There can be no doubt that as a writer, Mr. Bradbury was a great stylist. His prose was lyrical in nature, very nearly approaching poetry at times. At the same time his style was very economical. In but a few words he could describe things so that a reader could actually visualise them. At no point in his career was Ray Bradbury ever dry or boring.
While Ray Bradbury was a great stylist, his words also had weight to them. Ray Bradbury dealt with far more weighty issue than many of his contemporary fantasy writers or the science fiction writers with whom he was often grouped. In Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury dealt with book burning, the dehumanising qualities of technology, and the superiority of knowledge over ignorance. In Something Wicked This Way Comes Mr. Bradbury dealt with childhood and adulthood, belief and fear, life and death, and the struggle between good and evil. Essentially being a collection of interrelated short stories, The Martian Chronicles touched upon a number of themes: ecology, xenophobia, racism, nuclear annihilation, dealing with one's past, and government bureaucracy. Throughout all of Ray Bradbury's works runs the theme of nostalgia for simpler times, a theme owing a good deal to Mr. Bradbury's fond memories of Waukegan, Illinois.
While Ray Bradbury often dealt with some very heavy subjects in his books and short stories, his works were always character driven. This is particularly true of what I consider his greatest work, the novel Something Wicked This Way Comes. Will Holloway is in many ways a typical American boy of the early 20th Century, obedient but at the same time possessing a desire for adventure. His father Charles Holloway is a middle aged library custodian who is somewhat dissatisfied with his life and wishes he was closer to his son. The father and son's relationship is as central to the novel as their struggle against the evil Cooger & Dark's Pandemonium Shadow Show. Mr. Bradbury's novel Fahrenheit 451 is also very much a character driven novel. Guy Montag, the fireman who begins to question the hedonistic society in which he lives, stands out as one of the great tragic heroes of mid-20th Century literature.
A great stylist who dealt with important issues and created memorable characters, it should perhaps be no surprise that Ray Bradbury should prove to be so popular. Indeed, as I stated earlier, his total impact on popular culture is impossible to adequately gauge. He is to American literature what The Beatles are to music, Lucille Ball to television, or Sir Alfred Hitchcock to film--an artist whose contributions to his medium of choice are so great that it is impossible to know how far they actually extend.
As to myself, Ray Bradbury may have had more impact than all but a few other writers (Lester Dent, Charles Dickens, and Emily Bronte). It was the magician Mr. Electrico who inspired Ray Bradbury to be a writer. Ray Bradbury in turn inspired many of the rest of us to become writers. That having been said, Ray Bradbury's impact on me did not end with being one of the people who inspired me to become a writer. In many ways Ray Bradbury's novels and short stories taught me to be a better person. Particularly through the novels Something Wicked This Way Comes and Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury taught me that human selfishness is a source of not only evil ,but unhappiness, and that in the end it is better to think of others and to take pleasure in the little things in life. Ray Bradbury taught me that human relationships matter more than youth, beauty, wealth, or anything else. Quite simply, I think Ray Bradbury made me a better person. I rather suspect that I am not alone in this and this is the reason so many of us are mourning him so.
Indeed, it would seem that Mr. Electrico was right when he touched young Ray Bradbury's shoulder with his electrified sword and told him to "Live forever." Even if one does not believe in an afterlife, it is arguable that Ray Bradbury will live forever. He has left behind an oeuvre of short stories and novels that people will still be reading centuries. He will never be forgotten.
Raymond Douglas Bradbury was born on 22 August 1920 in Waukegan, Illinois. He was a direct descendent of Mary Perkins Bradbury, who was among those in Salem, Massachusetts who was tried, convicted, and hanged as a witch in 1700. Through Mary Bradbury he was also related to Ralph Waldo Emerson (who was one of Mary Perkins Bradbury's great great grandchildren). As a youngster he was a voracious reader. He read the works of the Brothers Grimm, L. Frank Baum's tales of Oz, the stories of Edgar Allan Poe, the works of Jules Verne, the works of H. G. Wells, and the books of Edgar Rice Burroughs. He would eventually discover such science fiction pulp magazines as Amazing Stories and comic strips such as Harold Foster's Tarzan, Buck Rogers, and Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon. Even as a child he loved films. He saw Lon Chaney's Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), The Mummy (1932), King Kong (1933), Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933), and many other classic films. He loved magic as a child and saw the Great Blackstone on stage.
It was during the Labour Day weekend of 1932 that young Ray Bradbury's life would change forever. That weekend he attended a carnival in Waukegan where he watched a stage show of a magician called Mr. Electrico. Mr. Electrico would sit in an electric chair with the current going throughout his body. At the end of the show he would raise a sword and knight each of the children there, the electricity still running through his body. As Mr. Electrico knighted young Mr. Bradbury, electricity ran through the sword and throughout Mr. Bradbury's body. As Mr. Electrico knighted young Ray Bradbury, he shouted, "Live forever!" The next day Ray Bradbury returned to the carnival to talk to Mr. Electrico. Mr. Electrico introduced him to others at the carnival--the Fat Lady, the Tattooed Man, the Skeleton Man, and the other people in the carnival's sideshows. Mr. Electrico and Ray Bradbury talked for some length about their various philosophies. It was the next day that his family moved to Tuscon, Arizona and not long afterwards that Ray Bradbury began writing full time. Not only would Ray Bradbury's experience with Mr. Electrico and the carnival lead to him taking up writing, but it would prove a source of inspiration for some of his most famous works, including the short story "The Black Ferris," the short story "The Illustrated Man (and the framing device of the book of the same name)," the novel Dandelion Wine, and the novel Something Wicked This Way Comes.
It was in 1934 that Ray Bradbury's family moved to Los Angeles, California. It was there that Mr. Bradbury met fellow science fiction fan Forrest J. Ackerman. Mr. Ackerman invited Mr. Bradbury to the Los Angeles chapter of the Science Fiction League. It was through the Science Fiction League that he would meet and receive encouragement from such professional science fiction and fantasy writers as Robert A. Heinlen, Fredric Brown, and Jack Williamson. Among Ray Bradbury's friends involved in the Science Fiction League was future special effects legend Ray Harryhausen. During this period Ray Bradbury contributed to various fanzines. In 1939 he launched his own fanzine, Futuria Fantasia, which lasted for four issues. He would also contribute to the film magazine Script.
It was in 1941that Ray Bradbury made his first professional sale. The short story "Pendulum" was co-written with Henry Hasse and appeared in the November 1941 issue of Super Science Stories. It was by the end of 1942 that Mr. Bradbury had established himself as a full time writer. Ray Bradbury's earliest work was published in the various fantasy and science fiction pulp magazines of the day (Weird Tales, Astounding), but eventually he would become one of the first authors considered to be a science fiction writer (even if he actually was not) to be published in mainstream, mass circulation magazines. His story "One Timeless Spring" was published in the 13 April 1945 issue of Collier's. That same year a young editor at Mademoiselle named Truman Capote rescued Ray Bradbury's short story "The Homecoming" from a slush pile. The story was published in the October 1946 issue of Mademoiselle and won an O. Henry Award. Afterwards Ray Bradbury would be published in a number of mass circulation magazines, including Esquire, Good Housekeeping, McCall's, Maclean's, Playboy, The Saturday Evening Post, Seventeen, and many others. It was in 1947 that Ray Bradbury's first collection of short stories, Dark Carnival, would be published.
The year 1950 saw Ray Bradbury make another breakthrough. The Martian Chronicles collected many of Mr. Bradbury's fantasy stories about colonists on the planet Mars in a format that partly an anthology, partly a novel. The book found its way to the hands of novelist Christopher Isherwood, who announced Mr. Bradbury as "a very great and unusual talent." The Martian Chronicles would then prove to have mainstream success often denied many fantasy and science fiction books. Mr. Bradbury would follow the success of The Martian Chronicles with another book that was partly an anthology and partly a novel, The Illustrated Man, in 1951.
Ray Bradbury would see even more success with his first true novel, Fahrenheit 451, in 1953. The novel had its beginnings in the short story "Bright Phoenix," written in 1947, which Mr. Bradbury expanded into the novella "The Fireman," published in Galaxy Science Fiction in 1951. He later expanded the novella into the novel Fahrenheit 451. The novel would prove to be one of Ray Bradbury's most successful and most lasting works. In 1966 it was adapted by Francois Truffaut as a motion picture starring Oskar Werner and Julie Christie. Ray Bradbury would follow the success of Fahrenheit 451 with nine more novels. Like The Martian Chronicles and The Illustrated Man, Dandelion Wine was partly an anthology and partly a novel. It drew heavily upon Mr. Bradbury's childhood in Waukegan, Illinois. What may be his most famous work besides Fahrenheit 451, also drew heavily upon his childhood in Waukegan. Alongside Fahrenheit 451, Something Wicked This Way Comes is arguably Ray Bradbury's masterpiece and his most famous novel. A horror novel with elements of fantasy, Something Wicked This Way Comes dealt with such weighty material as adolescence, belief, fear, death, and the struggle between good and evil. The Readers' List of The Modern Library included Something Wicked This Way Comes among the 100 Best Novels. The novel was adapted as a film of the same name in 1983.
Ray Bradbury's other novels include The Halloween Tree (1972), Death Is a Lonely Business (1985), A Graveyard for Lunatics (1990), Green Shadows, White Whale (1992), From the Dust Returned (2001), Let's All Kill Constance (2002), and Farewell Summer (2006). During Mr. Bradbury's lifetime there were around forty anthologies of his works published.
As prolific as Ray Bradbury was, one would think he would have had no time to write anything but his short stories and novels. In fact, not only did many of Ray Bradbury's short stories and novels provide the basis for television show episodes and feature films, but he also wrote several screenplays and teleplays. Several of his short stories would be adapted for the radio shows Dimension X and later X Minus One. The first television adaptation of his work would be a 1951 adaptation of "Zero Hour" for the series Lights Out. Over the years Ray Bradbury's short stories would be adapted for such television shows as Suspense, Tales of Tomorrow, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and The Twilight Zone. In 1980 NBC aired a mini-series based on The Martian Chronicles. He would write original teleplays for such shows as Fireside Theatre, Steve Canyon, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and The Twilight Zone. From 1985 to 1992 Ray Bradbury hosted Ray Bradbury Theatre, an anthology series based on his many short stories. Not only did Mr. Bradbury host the series, but he also wrote many of the teleplays.
Over the years several motion pictures would be based on the works of Ray Bradbury, including The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms (1953--inspired by the story "The Fog Horn"), Fahrenheit 451 (1966), The Picasso Summer (1969--based on the story of the same name), The Illustrated Man (1969), Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983), Quest (1984--based on the story "Frost and Fire"), The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit (1998), A Sound of Thunder (2005), and Chrysalis (2008). Ray Bradbury would also work on original screenplays for Hollywood, including It Came From Outer Space (1953), Moby Dick (1956), King of Kings (1961), the animated short "Icarus Montgolfier Wright" (1962), and Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland (1989). New adaptations of Fahrenheit 451, The Illustrated Man, Something Wicked This Way Comes, and Dandelion Wine are currently in pre-production.
I have been a fan of Ray Bradbury's work since childhood. When I was young I went through a period during which I read a good deal of science fiction. It was during this period that I discovered Ray Bradbury's short stories and novels. While I soon discovered that most science fiction novels were not to my tastes and stopped reading many of the writers I read during that period, I never abandoned Ray Bradbury. Of course, much of this is perhaps because Ray Bradbury was not actually a science fiction writer, despite what numerous obituaries in the mainstream media proclaimed today. Ray Bradbury himself once stated, "First of all, I don't write science fiction," he said. "I've only done one science-fiction book and that's Fahrenheit 451, based on reality. It was named so to represent the temperature at which paper ignites. Science fiction is a depiction of the real. Fantasy is a depiction of the unreal. So Martian Chronicles is not science fiction, it's fantasy. It couldn't happen, you see?" Ray Bradbury was much more a fantasist than he ever was a science fiction writer. He did not concern himself with technology, gadgetry, and what could happen. Instead Mr. Bradbury wrote about the human spirit, whether what he was writing was possible or not.
Of course, even referring to Ray Bradbury by as broad a term as "fantasist" does not seem quite right. The simple fact is that in many respects Mr. Bradbury transcended genre classification. This can be seen in his most famous works. Fahrenheit 451 was obviously science fiction. The Martian Chronicles and Dandelion Wine were fantasies. Something Wicked This Way Comes is a horror novel (the greatest horror novel ever written, in my humble opinion). While the vast majority of Ray Bradbury's short stories and novels contained fantastic elements of some sort, those short stories and novels could be considered as belonging to a wide variety of genres. His short story "The Jar" could be considered both a suspense story and a horror story. His short story “The Very Gentle Murders" is a piece of black comedy. His novels Death Is a Lonely Business, A Graveyard for Lunatics, and Let's Kill Constance are all mysteries. Not only did Ray Bradbury work in several genres, but arguably most of his works can be considered to belong to more than one genre. Although widely considered a horror novel, Something Wicked This Way Comes contains a good deal of fantasy. The Halloween Tree is more or less a fantasy novel, but one with touches of horror. In some ways, I suppose Ray Bradbury could be considered a genre all his own.
Indeed, Ray Bradbury could in many ways be considered as creating his very own genre, one in which American small town life is blended with the fantastic. While it is true that many of H. P. Lovecraft's works are set in small towns (Innsmouth, Dunwich), Mr. Lovecraft's small towns were creepy, New England villages that hardly seem typical of American small towns. In contrast, the small towns of Ray Bradbury's short stories and novels could have come straight from a Norman Rockwell painting. They were comforting and familiar in the way that Mayberry on The Andy Griffith Show is, the sort of quiet hamlets one can find anywhere in the Midwest or South. Of course, the difference between Ray Bradbury's Green Town, Illinois and Mayberry, North Carolina is that in Mayberry one would not expect to one of its inhabitants to build a Happiness Machine or for the visiting carnival to contain evil incarnate. Ray Bradbury blended the familiarity and comfort of American small town life with fantastic elements that was all too convincing. In doing so he would prove to be an influence on Stephen King (who in his book Danse Macabre stated, "My first experience of real horror came at the hands of Ray Bradbury."), Clive Barker, Neil Gaiman, Margaret Atwood, and many others.
In fact, Ray Bradbury's influence on Anglophonic pop culture is so great that it cannot ever be adequately estimated. The concept of the "butterfly effect (in which a small change in one place may cause greater changes elsewhere)" was dealt with first in Ray Bradbury's short story "The Sound of Thunder" in 1952. In that story the killing of a mere butterfly by a time traveller at the time of the dinosaurs results in subtle changes in the present. Ray Bradbury's most famous novels would not only prove to have a lasting influence not only on literature and film, but even on music. The novel Something Wicked This Way Comes inspired the songs "Cooger and Dark" by Mandrake Paddle Steamer, "The Dark Ride" by Helloween, "Something Wicked (that way went)" by Vernian Process, and "Something Wicked This Way Comes" by Wednesday 13. The concept albums Imaginaerum by Nightwish, Carnival of Lost Souls by Nox Arcana, and The Last Temptation by Alice Cooper were also inspired by the novel. The album Pandemonium Shadow Show by Harry Nilsson took its title from the carnival in the novel. Something Wicked This Way Comes is mentioned in Stephen King's novel The Dead Zone. Something Wicked This Way Comes also provided the basis for two radio dramas. The novel was also spoofed on South Park and Tiny Toon Adventures.
Fahrenheit 451 would also have a huge impact on Anglophonic pop culture. The novel would be referenced in television shows ranging from The Simpsons to Lost. It would also be referenced in several movies (including Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, the title of which did not please Mr. Bradbury) and possibly inspire others (including Equlibrium from 2002 and The Island from 2005). Fahrenheit 451 is quoted at the beginning of Stephen King's Firestarter. Andrew Fox's novel The Good Humour Man was an homage to Fahrenheit 451. Robert Calvert entitled a collection of poems (and later an album of poems as well)
Centigrade 232--a reference to Fahrenheit 451 (232 degrees Celsius equals 451 degrees Fahrenheit). In the poem "Learn by Heart This Poem of Mine," Hungarian poet György Faludy references Fahrenheit 451. Like Something Wicked This Way Comes, Fahrenheit 451 would also inspire music. Heavy metal band Steel Prophet's album Dark Hallucinations contains a suite of songs based on the novel. The Hawkwind album Choose Your Masques featured a song entitled "Fahrenheit 451."
Beyond Something Wicked This Way Comes and Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury would yet other influences upon pop culture. The short story "The Rocket Man" may have inspired two songs: "Rocket Man" by Elton John and "The Rocket Man" by Pearls Before Swine. The Apollo 15 astronauts named a crater on the moon "Dandelion Crater" after Ray Bradbury's novel Dandelion Wine. Rush's song "The Body Electric" appears to have been inspired by Ray Bradbury's short story "I Sing the Body Electric."
As to why Ray Bradbury had such an impact on pop culture, the reasons are perhaps manifold. There can be no doubt that as a writer, Mr. Bradbury was a great stylist. His prose was lyrical in nature, very nearly approaching poetry at times. At the same time his style was very economical. In but a few words he could describe things so that a reader could actually visualise them. At no point in his career was Ray Bradbury ever dry or boring.
While Ray Bradbury was a great stylist, his words also had weight to them. Ray Bradbury dealt with far more weighty issue than many of his contemporary fantasy writers or the science fiction writers with whom he was often grouped. In Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury dealt with book burning, the dehumanising qualities of technology, and the superiority of knowledge over ignorance. In Something Wicked This Way Comes Mr. Bradbury dealt with childhood and adulthood, belief and fear, life and death, and the struggle between good and evil. Essentially being a collection of interrelated short stories, The Martian Chronicles touched upon a number of themes: ecology, xenophobia, racism, nuclear annihilation, dealing with one's past, and government bureaucracy. Throughout all of Ray Bradbury's works runs the theme of nostalgia for simpler times, a theme owing a good deal to Mr. Bradbury's fond memories of Waukegan, Illinois.
While Ray Bradbury often dealt with some very heavy subjects in his books and short stories, his works were always character driven. This is particularly true of what I consider his greatest work, the novel Something Wicked This Way Comes. Will Holloway is in many ways a typical American boy of the early 20th Century, obedient but at the same time possessing a desire for adventure. His father Charles Holloway is a middle aged library custodian who is somewhat dissatisfied with his life and wishes he was closer to his son. The father and son's relationship is as central to the novel as their struggle against the evil Cooger & Dark's Pandemonium Shadow Show. Mr. Bradbury's novel Fahrenheit 451 is also very much a character driven novel. Guy Montag, the fireman who begins to question the hedonistic society in which he lives, stands out as one of the great tragic heroes of mid-20th Century literature.
A great stylist who dealt with important issues and created memorable characters, it should perhaps be no surprise that Ray Bradbury should prove to be so popular. Indeed, as I stated earlier, his total impact on popular culture is impossible to adequately gauge. He is to American literature what The Beatles are to music, Lucille Ball to television, or Sir Alfred Hitchcock to film--an artist whose contributions to his medium of choice are so great that it is impossible to know how far they actually extend.
As to myself, Ray Bradbury may have had more impact than all but a few other writers (Lester Dent, Charles Dickens, and Emily Bronte). It was the magician Mr. Electrico who inspired Ray Bradbury to be a writer. Ray Bradbury in turn inspired many of the rest of us to become writers. That having been said, Ray Bradbury's impact on me did not end with being one of the people who inspired me to become a writer. A Shroud of Thoughts' Eighth Anniversary
It was 8 years ago today that I made my first post in this blog, A Shroud of Thoughts. At the time I had no idea I would still be writing in the blog 8 years and 1897 posts later. I feel as if I cannot take any real credit for keeping the blog up so long, as in many respects I feel I have no choice in the matter. I simply feel compelled to keep writing the blog. In all that time I have never thought of bringing it to an end. In fact, I sometimes think my "Famous Final Post" will be my own eulogy.
For those of you who have wondered where the title of this blog comes from, it is from Lord Byron's Childe Harold's Pilgrimage canto iii stanza 113:
I have not loved the world, nor the world me;
I have not flattered its rank breath, nor bow'd
To its idolatries a patient knee,
Nor coin'd my cheek to smiles, nor cried aloud
In worship of an echo; in the crowd
They could not deem me one of such; I stood
Among them, but not of them; in a shroud
Of thoughts which were not their thoughts, and still could,
Had I not filed my mind, which thus itself subdued.
As is usual on this blog's anniversary, I have compiled a list of what I think are its best posts from the past year. I have to confess I was somewhat disappointed in my output during 2011. It seemed as if I was perpetually writing eulogies for those pop culture figures who died. Worse yet, I can honestly say that 2011 was the worst year of my life. I lost my job. My best friend died. My cat Max died. That having been said, during the year I did make new friends and I also published my first book (Television: Rare and Well Done). Regardless here are what I feel to be the best posts from the past year of A Shroud of Thoughts.
