I just liked to see Gene play against type as he did in Pilot #5 (even if he didn't have a lot to work with in that one) and Christmas Holiday. I mean, sociopathic murderer is about as far from Donald Lockwood as one can get...

Speaking of Mr. Lockwood, I still think Noel Airman is similar to both him and Jerry Mulligan. The difference is that Lockwood and Mulligan had both the talent and the drive to achieve their dreams. Airman really didn't. As you point out, he could only be a big fish in a small pond. But like Lockwood and Mulligan he did have his dreams and his wishes. And like Lockwood and Mulligan, he was charming. While I'm on the topic of Marjorie Morningstar, I guess I should point out that I think Natalie Wood was miscast in that Romeo and Juliet gang musical, too... (-:

Yes, I knew he slowed down the acting because of Jeanne's illness and subsequent death. Thank you for mentioning that. I was in a bit of hurry finishing the article and didn't want to go into the "why" of why Gene's started playing in movies less and less.

Anyhow, thanks for posting. A very well spoken post. I thought Pilot #5 stunk like yesterday's fish. The character that Gene plays is terrible and I would like to forget it as a whole when it comes to Gene's filmography.
The Three Musketeers I thought was ok. It seemed to me about as good as most modern remakes, not to mention we get to see Gene shirtless.
In Christmas Holiday he plays a very strange character and some have supposed that his character is gay. I didn't get the gay vibe from the film, but still, it is a movie that I could live with out seeing again in my lifetime. (And, me being Tek that is saying a lot).
In The Black Hand was he not a first generation American? Admittedly, it has been at least 5 years since I have seen this movie; still I want to say it is so. If so, his accent is about right. =)
Devil makes three- loved it. Nuff said there.
OK, Marjorie Morningstar- I liked this film. I thought Gene was great playing the washed up singer who can only be a big fish in a very small pond. Marjorie tries to take him from said pond and finds in the real world, not only is he a small fish, he simply can not deal with being the small fish
This is absolutely different than the roles played in AAIP and SITR. I am not sure how you could really compare the characters other than they sing, dance and look really really good in tight clothes.
I thought Natalie Wood did a decent job in this movie as well. She was no more miscast in this movie than say playing a Hispanic woman embroiled in gang activity and singing about it. LOL
On to Inherit the Wind- great flick and I thought Gene was fabulous. He was perfect in this role, in my most humble opinion.
Anyway...
So we agree that he was a decent actor. However we disagree on several points that lead to this conclusion.
By the way, he never acted again in any real way because his wife died leaving him with children to raise alone. He dedicated himself to them and tried never to be more than 30 minutes from them.
Anyway, I enjoyed this post. =)
<<>>TorTorranhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06026932627340388561noreply@blogger.com
